Learning Teams – a model for continuous professional development

As part of its support to teachers following their training, PEP has organized Learning Team meetings on a local and regional level.

In the first semester of this school year, eleven Learning Team meetings for improving mathematics and science were organized.  During these meetings, 214 teachers were able to share their classroom experience, to discuss challenges and to receive peer- support.

Learning team meetings are usually 3 to 4 hours long and are led by PEP facilitators. Typical activities during these meetings include:

  • sharing experiences in implementing learning from PEP Improving math & science workshops:
  • discussing priorities in implementing new approaches and goals;
  • presenting innovative lesson plans and student products;
  • presenting their problems and brainstorming solutions;
  • discussing the PEP certification process; and
  • deciding activities between Learning Team meetings.

    In 2010, these meetings will be organized on a regular basis as part of the second mathematics and science training cycle for teachers. At the end of the first training day, the teachers will receive assignments to organize and conduct project-based learning activities with students, The projects will be shared and discussed during the meetings.

    It is planned that by the end of the project all teachers will be assigned to a local learning team will participate in at least two such meetings.

    Some Learning Teams are already meeting more regularly. For example, Shaban Alija, a mathematics teacher from Tetovo, informed us that teachers are very satisfied with this PEP activity, and teachers agreed to have Learning Teams meetings on a regular basis – once per  month.
